Acupuncture is best known for its
effects in reducing pain and is fast becoming the treatment of
choice. Because of this a need arose to integrate Traditional
Chinese Medicine with western procedures.
Acupuncture works because of its
interaction between pain and muscle length and position. When
muscles contract, the primary muscle shortens in order to create
movement. The opposing muscle then must lengthen for the
primary muscle to create the movement. When a client's
structural balance is altered, regardless of cause, there is an
imbalance created between the forces of these two muscles.
This imbalance affects range of motion, and predisposes to soreness
and/or pain.
Motor points are found in the
belly of the muscle where they most often correspond to the area
where the nerves enter the muscle. This is also the area of
the muscle that has the lowest resistance to electrical
conductivity. Motor point locations are very consistent from
person to person so they are relatively easy to
find. Acupuncture to the motor points resets a dysfunctioning
muscle and corrects abnormal muscle function, thereby balancing the
agonist and antagonist muscle groups. This technique leads to
improved muscle function and thereby can alleviate pain.
